With no matches until the following week, the L7’ took the opportunity to dust off the Christmas cobwebs, put some New Year resolutions into place and get back on the pitch for a L7s friendly/training session. With 18 L7s players available including 2 goalkeepers) and four fabulous L4s players, Gill Collins, Lucy Arnold, Nick Kitchener and Wendy Daden who had offered to play/coach the team on the pitch, 2 umpires Justin Ross, Steve Parish and coach Richard Ross, the stage was set for a fun match of 20 minute slots.
Captain Suzanne BD, supported by Nick, Wendy, new junior Ibbie, GK Sophie BD and six fine L7s players for the Greens against the Blues captained by Gill Collins, aided and abetted by Lucy, new junior Catherine, GK Gill and six fine L7s players, the stage was set for a fun match. Following team warm ups and teamtalks the competitiveness kicked in with end to end play for the first and second 20-minute session.
With Nick K directing the Green defence and explaining to new to hockey Henna positioning and Wendy supporting and encouraging the mid and forward line, the Greens scored with a lovely pass into the D from Ibbie to Suzanne. The Blues Captain Gill, responded by leading from the front with several attacks on the Green goal, but was closed by the Green defence. Lucy orchestrated the midfield with the ball switching from side to side giving the Blues space for a renewed attack, but the Greens surged forward with a renewed attack with Karen scoring from the top of the D. The match would have carried on possibly all night, but teas and cake were waiting in the clubhouse for the teams. A fab, fun match with the L4s was enjoyed by all!
Huge thank you for the L4s Gill, Nick, Wendy and Lucy who gave up their time to support, coach and train our team. Well done to Juniors Catherine and Ibbie who played in their first Ladies matches. Thank you also to the umpires Justin, Steve and Coach Richard, spectators and our own Photographer David Tinkler for the amazing action shots!
