Setting aside the score line, this was a very encouraging performance from an invigorated and restructured Chelmsford side. Sevenoaks position in the top echelons of the league was evidenced by the quality of the squad and they were well organised and played a fast-paced passing game. Chelmsford dealt with a short corner in the first minute but this was followed by a penalty stroke that was converted to give Sevenoaks an early 1-0 lead.
Chelmsford’s response was impressive and sustained. Excellent mid-field work had Sevenoaks reeling back, with Marie Kirkham, Jess Lazenby and Sophie Green influential in building attacks. The game looked to be going Chelmsford’s way when at the mid-point of the half Sevenoaks broke back and scored through a short corner. Keeping the pressure up, Sevenoaks had three more short corners, but some excellent goal-keeping by Chelsea Claridge denied the visitors any further score.
After the half-time restart a brilliant period of play from Chelmsford saw chances being created by forwards Alex Went, Collette Ager and Kate Taylor. The talented youngsters Annie Steingold, Georgia Davies and Claudia Topel disrupted Sevenoaks attempts to build attacking play and for long periods Chelmsford looked the more likely to score. But the quality of the Sevenoaks squad became apparent as they netted a couple of open play goals and a short corner.
Chelmsford maintained their commitment and in the final minutes pressed Sevenoaks back. A beautifully coordinated attack built from midfield was picked up by Alex Went who demonstrated her pace and struck a fine shot for Chelmsford’s deserved consolation goal.
Chelmsford’s next game is away at Harleston Magpies on Saturday 10 February with pushback at 2.00pm.
