We are saddened to announce the death of long-standing Chelmsford Hockey Club member, Roger Gaffney, yesterday morning after a brief illness.

Roger, or “Gaffers” as he was affectionately known by many, played for the club from the 1960s until retiring from Veterans hockey in the early 1980s.  He also played cricket and hockey for the Old Chelmsfordians, having attended KEGS, and taught for most of his working life at Rainsford School, Chelmsford where he was much loved by pupils for his enthusiasm for school sports, particularly cricket.

When not teaching or playing sport he could often be found in the Old Chelmsfordians’ clubhouse bar or the Walnut Tree pub in Broads Green!

A gentle and kind man, he will be missed by those who knew him.  Chelmsford Hockey Club would like to convey condolences to Roger’s family.  Funeral details to follow.
